Working in construction

OHS CARD

The first thing you need to know in NSW is, you cannot work on a building site without an OHS CARD, (Occupational Health and Safety in Construction Certificate), also known as a Green Card.   You can obtain one during the week at the TCP in Sydney.   It costs $110

In Queensland it is known as a Blue card and in Victoria a Red card.  If you have a Blue or Red card it is valid in NSW, but many construction sites don’t know this so it might be hard when getting inducted to your new worksite.

Your WA Blue Card should enable you to work on construction sites throughout Queensland, however, it will ultimately be up to your employer as to whether or not they allow this. The card is not recognized in any other states of Australia.

FINDING WORK

Check out our Classifieds page or the local newspapers for jobs. Alternatively, use our sponsored links. Many casual laboring jobs are found by word-of-mouth, so be proactive- speak to the big guy at the bar sporting the steel-toe-cap-boots and fluorescent construction top!  Irish bars are a good way of getting work, and you mustn’t forget to join a GAA team; this is the best way to network upon arrival in a new country, plus you’ll make friends for life; click me for a list of teams in NSW.
